Guy Harvey in BMW in Vedic City, Iowa

The first serious camera I used was my dad’s 35 mm Pentax. When he died in 1985 I inherited his camera. I read books about composition and exposure and shot Ektachrome and Fujifilm slides. I am grateful to my dad for this introduction to photography. It was only later that I discovered the wonderful black and white photographs my mom took as a photo journalist. She was talented.

Before I could take my photography much further I immersed myself in Transcendental Meditation and went to live in an ashram for many years. I gave my camera to my brother and didn’t take pictures for many years.

It wasn’t until 2003 that I purchased my first digital camera that I pursued my hobby again. By that time I was living in Fairfield, Iowa. My son was a toddler at the time and he was my primary subject. I think being passionate about a subject is one of the most important factors in creating compelling images and there is nothing like your own child for inspiration.

Later I got my first DSLR, and began taking classes and photographing the local area. I take photographs primarily for myself, though I appreciate when anyone expresses joy or gets some meaning from my images.

My favorite subject are trees and woodlands, the downtown of my hometown Fairfield and rural Iowa. The photographs presented here are from 2007 to the present.
